Undertrial immolates himself, dies

An undertrial, who immolated himself at the court lockup in Dhanbad, died at the hospital, Superintendent of Police Anil Palta said on Tuesday.

Ritesh Kumar Viswakarma had sustained ninety per cent burn injuries on Monday after setting himself on fire before being produced at the judicial magistrate's court in connection with the abduction and rape of a schoolgirl.

He died at the government hospital on Monday night.

Ritesh, who was arrested from Katrasgarh, near Dhanbad in May, sprinkled kerosene on his clothes and set himself on fire with a match stick as he waited along with 74 other undertrials for his turn to be produced before the magistrate, Palta said.

The police are inquiring how he managed to get the kerosene and the match-box while coming for the trail, he added.
