Rao deposits Rs 200,000
fine in bribery case

Former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao, who was sentenced to three years' rigorous imprisonment along with his cabinet colleague Buta Singh in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MPs bribery case, Friday deposited Rs 2 lakh fine imposed on him by the special court.

The amount was deposited in the court of Special Judge Ajit Bharihoke, who held Rao and Singh guilty of abetting the acceptance of illegal gratification by JMM MPs for voting against the July 1993 no-confidence motion in Parliament.

While sentencing them on October 12, the court had also imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh each.

The High Court on October 18 admitted Buta Singh's appeal against his conviction in the case and issued notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation asking the agency to file its reply by November 7. Rao is yet to file his appeal.

Admitting Buta Singh's appeal, Justice R S Sodhi had, however, made it clear that the court "will not suspend" the fine of Rs 2 lakh.
