Veerappan enjoys VCD films in the forest

S A Govindaraj, son-in-law of Dr Rajakumar who was released by forest brigand Veerappan, while recounting his 78-day ordeal in captivity to Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna in Bangalore on Tuesday, informed him that Veerappan has a collection of VCDs and a television set, official sources said.

Sources said, Veerappan gets a supply of VCD films and views them in the jungles.

This revelation has disproved the hitherto maintained belief that the outlaw just relied on a transistor.

Govindaraj, the sources said also told Krishna that Veerappan had several newspaper clippings pertaining to various hostage crises reported across the world including the recent Khandahar incident, in which militants hijacked IC 814 from Nepal.

It still remained a mystery how the brigand secured newspapers, despite being holed up in deep forests.

Govindaraj had said Veerappan never lodges his hostages in any house, fearing attack by police and prefers the thick forests to hide out.

Sources said the bandit had a trusted aide for procuring foodgrain supplies and it was he who travels to the nearby hamlet bi-weekly for purchases.

Though Veerappan keeps on changing his hideouts, the gang members do not walk too much and keep rotating in a radius of about 10 to 18 kms, sources said.

Sources said despite Veerappan sending warnings through video and audio cassettes against launching operations to nab him to free hostages, he had told Rajakumar and others abducted by him that he was least bothered about his life and was ready to face anything.
