SC moved against creation of Chhattisgarh

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Jabalpur chambers of commerce Wednesday moved the Supreme court against creation of new state of Chhattisgarh at a short notice.

The matter that came up before the three judge bench consisting of Justices B N Kirpal, D Raju and K G Balakrishna has been listed for further hearing on October 20.

The petition 545of 2000 mentions the Union home secretary, secretary law and justice and chief secretary of Madhya Pradesh as the three main respondents.

Lawyer for the petitioners, Raju Goburdhun, while arguing the case before the bench impressed upon the judges for an early hearing as a late hearing would be counter-productive for the petitioners as the new state would come into being on November 1, 2000 as notified in the Madhya Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000.

The petitioners argued that there was no proper infrastructure available either in Raipur, that has been selected to be the capital of the new state or elsewhere. There is no financial backing. No high court and many other things including a building for the state legistature. Even the establishment of a new capital for the state they would require a minimum of Rs 20 billion. According to the petitioners the new state would require Rs 500 billion to ensure its financial viability.
