8 get lifer for TDP leader's murder

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Eight persons were convicted for life and five others acquitted on Wednesday in connection with the murder of former minister and Telugu Desam Party leader P Siva Reddy in Hyderabad in 1993.

A special judge, while pronouncing the judgement said since the murder was an offshoot of political rivalry, awarding death penalty was not necessary.

Besides awarding life imprisonment to eight accused, the judge imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on each one of them.

P Siva Reddy, a powerful factional leader of TDP, was murdered by his rivals at the Sri Satya Sai Nigamamam in the state capital, where he had gone to attend a marriage in August, 1993.

Bombs were hurled at him, killing him on the spot. He was also hit with a boulder by the assailants. One of the assailants, Uppuluri Venkata Subba Reddy, was apprehended by the bystanders.

Reddy was popularly known as 'Bombula' Siva Reddy. He represented Jammalamadugu constituency in the faction-ridden Cuddapah district.

Reddy had served as labour minister in the NT Rama Rao cabinet in 1980s. He had a running feud with the local Congress leaders, who ultimately eliminated him when he was a sitting legislator.
