'Breakthrough' at Middle East summit

A correspondent

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak have agreed to make a public statement condemning violence in the Middle East, in what is being described as a summit breakthrough.

The emergency Middle East summit has reportedly produced an agreement to seek a cease-fire between Israel and the Palestinians.

The deal will commit Barak and Arafat to a cease-fire in the West Bank and Gaza, where violence has claimed more than 100 lives.

United States President Bill Clinton and other world leaders involved in the peace talks are preparing a statement announcing the elusive accord.
