Andhra prepares to face cyclone threat

The cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal, which lay centred about 450 kilometres east of the coastal city of Nellore on Tuesday morning, is likely to cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast by October 18 evening or night, according to meteorologists in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad Meteorological Centre director Dr C V V Bhadram said that the cyclonic storm is likely to intensify further and move in a west, north-westerly direction and cross south Andhra coast between Nellore town and Machilipatnam port town by Wednesday (October 18) evening or night.

Under the influence of the cyclonic storm, heavy to very heavy rain is likely at a few places in coastal Andhra over the next 48 hours. Gales with wind speeds of 90 to 100 kms/hour are likely to hit the south Andhra coast while those with wind speeds of 60 to 70 kms/hour are likely along the north Andhra coast, he informed.

Meanwhile, the state government has asked the district collectors in the nine coastal districts, particularly those in the south - Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur and Krishna - to be on alert to deal with any eventuality.

The district authorities have been asked by the government to take all precautionary steps, including evacuation of people from the vulnerable areas on the coast and brace up to undertake rescue and relief operations in case the cyclonic storm hits the Andhra coast.
