Tension after 'desecration' of
Shivaji statue in Nashik: PTI

Tension gripped Sinnar tehsil town, about 29 km from Nashik, following the alleged desecration of a statue of Shivaji early on Monday, police said.

The painting of the statue on the Nashik-Shirdi road, near a high school in Sinnar, was in progress on Sunday night. However, when some people went to supervise the work early on Monday, they found the statue being 'desecrated'.

People started throwing stones at vehicles on the Sinnar-Shirdi road, smashing window panes of several vehicles.

The mob also set on fire a bus of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation on the Nashik-Pune road, police added.

District superintendent of police (rural) Bhagwantrao More has gone to Sinnar and three platoons of the state reserve police have been deployed in the trouble-torn areas.

Major commercial establishments in Sinnar were shut on Monday, in response to a bandh called by Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party activists to protest against the incident.
