Kesri off ventilator, but remains serious

Former Congress president Sitaram Kesri remains in a serious condition at the intensive care unit of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and his vital systems are being maintained by administration of drugs.

"Kesri's condition is serious and his respiratory status is being maintained through an oxygen mask," doctors attending on him said on Monday. "His artery, blood, gas (ABG) analysis is satisfactory," according to hospital sources.

The sources said the veteran leader was taken off ventilator support on Sunday night and his vital systems were being maintained through the administration of drugs.

The 81-year-old had shown signs of some improvement on Sunday when doctors contemplated removing him from ventilator support.

Kesri, who was hospitalised on Thursday night with a fractured hip, was put on ventilators after being shifted to the ICU on Friday when he complained of chest pain and doctors found a sharp fall in his blood pressure.

He is diagnosed to be suffering from pulmonary embolism, a condition in which lung functions are severely compromised due to clots in blood vessels.
