Kesri shows slight improvement, but remains critical

Former Congress president Sitaram Kesri showed slight improvement on Saturday, but his condition remained critical, doctors attending on him at the intensive care unit of the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital said.

President K R Narayanan and former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao visited the hospital on Saturday morning to enquire about his health. The president talked to the doctors attending on the veteran Congress leader.

The 81-year-old leader, who was admitted to the hospital on Thursday night with a fractured hip, has been on ventilators after being shifted to the ICU on Friday when he complained of chest pain and the doctors found a sharp fall in his blood pressure.

Kesri is diagnosed to be suffering from pulmonary embolism, a condition in which clots in the vessels affect supply of blood from the lungs to the heart.

RML Medical Superintendent Dr C P Singh said, "Though he showed slight improvement in the respiratory status, he continues to be on artificial respirators.''

According to Dr Singh, Kesri is suffering from syanosis, which severely compromises the function of the lungs in the blood purification process.

The veteran leader underwent a coronary bypass operation in 1994.
