Congress leader Sitaram Kesri 'critical'

The 81-year-old leader, admitted to hospital on Thursday evening with a fractured hip, was put on artificial respiratory support after being shifted to the ICU on Friday morning. Kesri was shifted to the ICU after he complained of chest pain and doctors found a sharp fall in blood pressure.

RML medical superintendent Dr C P Singh said Kesri is diagnosed to be suffering from pulmonary embolism, a condition in which clots in the vessels affect supply of blood from the lungs to the heart. ''He is on ventilators and his condition partially improved on Friday evening,'' Singh said.

However, he described his condition as ''serious with severely compromised lung functions''.

According to Singh, Kesri is suffering from syanosis, which severely compromises the function of lungs in blood purification.

The medical superintendent said Kesri has a history of serious intestinal conditions compromising the functioning of his lungs. The leader underwent a coronary artery operation in 1994. ''Since then he has not enjoyed good cardiac functioning,'' he said.

Congress leaders, including All India Congress Committee general secretary Oscar Fernandes, committee treasurer Motilal Vora and V George, private secretary of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who is in Jaipur, enquired about Kesri's health.
