Curfew to be relaxed in Biharsharif

Bihar Home Secretary U N Panjiyar on Wednesday stated that the situation in trouble torn Biharsharif town was peaceful and the state government would issue orders to relax curfew.

The curfew would be relaxed in two phases - for two hours commencing from 1100 to 1300 hours (IST) under first phase in Sohsarai and in other areas of the town from 1400 to 1600 hours, he informed. The decision in this regard was taken at a high level meeting held in the town, Panjiyar said.

He said arrangements for immersion of the Durga idol, seized by the police after it was installed at a disputed site, were being made with the consent of the people. The immersion would be carried out under full security cover.

According to him, intensive patrolling continued and the army was also conducting flag marches in the strife-torn town.

Meanwhile, the walls of the temple constructed through kar seva at the disputed site were brought down by the administration and the bricks and other materials were kept in police custody.

The state government has alerted its entire administrative machinery to prevent the tension in Biharsharif from spreading to other sensitive areas of the state.

Panjiyar, who is camping in Biharsharif, said that a direction had been issued to the administration of all districts falling in sensitive areas to remain extra cautious to avoid any untoward incident.

He said the administrative machinery had been given additional powers to deal with any tension that may erupt.

Panjiyar said the district magistrates and superintendents of police had been asked to remain watchful in their areas. The cops had also been asked to keep strict vigil in all sensitive pockets. Patrolling had been intensified in the state, he added.

Panjiyar said though there was some tension in Giridih, the situation had been brought under control by timely intervention of the district administration.

Meanwhile, senior Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and Member of the Legislative Assembly from Biharsharif Pappu Khan on Wednesday alleged that some people with vested interests had disturbed the cordial atmosphere in the town to tarnish the image of the RJD government in Bihar.

He said the violence was instigated by some anti-social elements under a well-planned conspiracy. Khan appealed to residents of the trouble torn town to show patience and maintain harmony.
