Was Lohardagga SP killed by police bullet?

Our Correspondent in Patna

The killing of Lohardagga Superintendent of Police Ajay Kumar Singh on October 4 has taken a new twist with the National Security Guards, according to reports, hinting that the lone bullet, which took the SP's life, may have belonged to the police department.

The post-mortem report also said that the bullet that killed the SP was fired from a close range, about four to five feet, and from a rifle.

Earlier, Bihar Director General of Police K A Jacob had informed that the encounter took place when Singh was returning after conducting a raid. The SP, who was shot in the temple by extremists belonging to the banned Maoist Communist Centre, died on the spot, he had said.

Jacob had said that several rounds were fired during the encounter in which some extremists were also killed. However, the actual number of extremists killed during the encounter was not available, he had said.

The NSG team made a study of the site where the encounter took place and held talks with police personnel and other officials. It concluded that the blast, which preceded the encounter, was not triggered by a land mine as was reported earlier but by a high quality explosive. It was only after this blast that the SP got down from his vehicle and was killed by a lone bullet.

In another important development, discrepancies have been detected in the official version about the number of rounds fired by the police during the encounter.

While Deputy Inspector General of Police N C Dhondhiyal said 193 rounds were fired, the Regional Inspector General of Police Rameshwar Oraon said that 50 to 60 rounds were fired. However, there is only one bullet mark on the SP's jeep.

Also, reports that eight other police personnel besides the SP had been killed turned out to be untrue. Only the SP's bodyguard received slight injuries.

Singh's body was brought to Ranchi and an autopsy performed.
