Bihar seeks more forces for anti-Naxalite operations

Concerned over the killing of the Lohardagga police superintendent and spurt in Naxalite activities in recent months, the Bihar government has sought 50 additional companies of central para-military forces for anti-extremist operations, officials said on Monday.

Bihar government had requested the Centre for 50 additional CPMF companies to effectively launch a joint offensive with Madhya Pradesh police against the ultra-leftist guerillas, state Home Secretary U N Panjiar said.

The state at present has only 26 companies of CPMF, including three of the Rapid Action Force, which are meant for handling riot situations rather than tackling extremist violence, he said.

An official spokesman said a meeting of officials of Naxalite-hit states held at New Delhi recently had decided on launching a co-ordinated offensive against the ultra-left rebels jointly by police forces of Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.

Senior police and civil officials of the two states subsequently met and chalked out a strategy, that included intensive patrolling in the border areas and joint raids after sealing off of the boundaries, he said.

Some days back, Lohardagga Superintendent of Police Ajay Kumar Singh was gunned down by ultra-left banned Maoist Communist Centre guerillas at Bishrar in Chandwa valley bordering Palamu district on October four.
