Curfew imposed in Bihar town

Indefinite curfew was clamped in Bihar's Nalanda district headquarters in Biharsharif on Monday morning in view of tension over the construction of a temple of Goddess Durga on a disputed piece of land at Ambair Chowk in the town, according to district magistrate Rajesh Agrawal.

Agrawal said curfew was imposed as tension was running high as thousands of kar sevaks laid the foundation stone for construction of temple on Sunday defying a ban and despite heavy deployment of security personnel.

An image of Goddess Durga was installed on the site on October 4 as the puja festivity began, he said.

Director General of Police K A Jacob, Inspector General Intelligence Ashis Ranjan, Regional Inspector General of Patna Range Neelmani and Deputy Inspector General of Central Range A C Verma all are camping in the town.

Two companies of Central Reserve Police Force and one company of Rapid Action Force have been deployed in the town to maintain law and order, Agrawal said.

Police were intensively patrolling. "The situation is tense but well under control", the district magistrate said.
