Set example, cut spending, Sudershan tells ministers

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief K C Sudershan said ministers should initiate measures to cut expenditure from 10 to 25 per cent if they are really concerned about the rise in fuel prices.

At the annual gathering of RSS volunteers on Vijayadashami in Nagpur, Sudershan pointed out that government officials were the biggest consumers of petrol. Yet, the government was battling to reduce losses caused by the increase in fuel prices by oil-producing nations.

The RSS chief disapproved of cavalcades of vehicles accompanying ministers and asked for a reduction in the number of vehicles in such convoys, which would automatically cut the expenditure on petrol.

The losses incurred by the government had gone up from Rs 120 billion to Rs 235 billion, he said.

He stressed the need to opt for alternative fuels. Ethanol made from molasses and sugarcane peels could be one such, he said, pointing out that Brazil and Thailand had already started using it. If India adopted the same technology, it could save up to Rs 50 billion in foreign exchange, he said.
