Congressman among 7 killed in J&K

A Congress politician and three extremists were among seven persons killed while ultras attacked the house of a protected person and torched the houses of four special police officers in separate incidents in Jammu & Kashmir since Friday night.

Official sources said in Jammu that a Congress block president, Zafar Hussain, was shot dead and his son seriously wounded when militants ambushed their vehicle at Mughal Maidan in Doda district on Friday evening.

Reports from Rajouri district said an army jawan was killed and another injured when extremists opened fire on a patrol party in Bei Nambal area. The troops retaliated and one civilian was killed in the crossfire, the sources said.

A militant was killed in a heavy exchange of fire between troops and extremists in the Barneli forest in Udhampur district. But his companions managed to escape under cover of darkness. One army officer sustained a bullet injury in the clash and was taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, an official spokesman in Srinagar said unidentified militants shot dead a special police officer, Shahbaz Malik, at the capital's SHMS Hospital on Friday evening.

Malik, who was attending on a patient in the hospital, was heading towards the canteen when the ultras killed him, he said.

He said security forces shot dead an unidentified militant at Tarabal in the Gurez sector of Baramulla district late on Friday night.

Police picked up the body of an unidentified person from Checknallah-Barnai in Gurez on Saturday.

Militants opened fire on the house of a protected person, Abdul Razzaq Mir, at Zaithan in Badgam district on Friday night.

The police guards posted in the house returned the fire, forcing the militants to escape. None was hurt in the shootout, the spokesman said.

Suspected militants burnt the houses of four surrendered militants, currently working as special police officers, at Khoriwali and Madoon village in Rajouri district in the intervening night of October 5/6. Before torching the houses the militants asked the family members of the SPOs to come out, the sources said.
