India recognises transfer of
power in Yugoslavia: PTI

Recognising the transfer of power in Yugoslavia, India Friday warmly congratulated President-elect Vojislav Kostunica and hoped that hardships faced by people in that country over the past years would now end immediately.

Recalling India's traditional and historical ties with Yugoslavia, the external affairs ministry said, "We wish the new leadership and the people of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia well, and expect that they take their rightful place in the community of nations."

"The government on this occasion offers to President-elect Vojislav Kostunica its warm congratulations and reaffirms its friendship for the people of Yugoslavia," an MEA release said.

"It is the government's view that with a successful conclusion of the electoral process, peace and stability in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia must now return," it said.

Presidential, along with parliamentary elections, were held in Yugoslavia on September 24 but no candidate secured a majority and a second round of polls was slated for October 8.

Following a constitutional court verdict, a complete de novo presidential election was called and the run-off on October 8 cancelled. This triggered public protests, including moves towards seizure of parliament buildings and other centres.

The release said India, which stands for democratic order and peaceful succession in democracy, has been closely following the developments in that country.
