Gen Musharraf's uncle dies in Delhi

Anees-ur-rehman in New Delhi

Khalid Mehmood, uncle of Pakistan chief executive General Pervez Musharraf, died after a cardiac arrest in New Delhi on Wednesday. He was 75.

A bachelor, he lived alone in the walled city and was buried on Wednesday evening at the Delhi Gate graveyard with no Pakistan high commission officials present, his friends said.

Mehmood was the enigmatic relative who revealed the Indian roots of Gen Musharraf soon after the October 12 military take over in Pakistan.

Mehmood was born in the same Nehar Wali haveli, behind Golcha cinema in the walled city, where Gen Musharraf spent his early childhood.

He subscribed to the leftist ideology and spent his last years in penury. He ran a small publishing business at Urdu Bazaar near Jama Masjid, which ran into losses in the face of mounting competition.

When Mehmood's interview to UNI on Gen Musharraf's roots created a sensation, several media organisations came forward to interview him, but he refused to oblige saying he did not want to cash in on his nephew's success.
