10 killed in Lanka suicide bomb attack

At least 10 people were killed and 45 injured in a suicide bomb attack at an election rally near Anuradhapura in central province, about 250 km from Colombo on Thursday evening.

The incident occurred when a suicide bomber blew himself up as a policeman tried to search him at the entrance to the rally site around 1715 hours (local time).

The meeting, organised near a crowded bus stand at Madawechchiya, about 25 km from Anuradhapura, was to be addressed by People's Alliance candidate and Deputy Minister Tissa Karalyddea.

Karalyddea, however, escaped unhurt. The bomber and the policemen were among those killed on the spot.

This is the second bomb blast at an election rally within three days.

On Monday, 26 people, including a PA candidate, were killed and more than 50 injured when a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam suicide bomber struck at an election meeting. In an attack earlier, deputy minister and National Unity Alliance candidate M L A M Hizbulla survived an assassination by the LTTE.
