CBI custody for accused in Harpreet Kaur case

A designated court at Patiala on Thursday remanded four people arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with the mysterious death of Harpreet Kaur, daughter of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee chief Bibi Jagir Kaur, to CBI custody till October 8.

CBI sources said the agency had so far arrested four persons from Punjab and Delhi, including an Akali Dal member, on charges of conspiracy and illegal confinement of the 19-year-old girl.

They are Harvinder Kumar, Satya Kumari, Paramjit Singh Raipur (Akali Dal) and Sanjiv Kumar.

The CBI had, last week, submitted the FIR in the case to the high court and media reports said Bibi Jagir Kaur, her personal security officer and assistant sub-inspector of Punjab Police Nishan Singh and Dalwinder Kaur, sister-in-law of Paramjit Singh were listed among the accused.

While Harvinder was Dalwinder Kaur's driver, Satya and Sanjiv Kumar were working in her house.

Harpreet had spent her last days in Dalwinder's house, before she died on April 21 this year.

The arrests were the result of the investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of Harpreet, who died after what her family members said was a 'serious bout of food-poisoning'.

However, the fact that her body was cremated without a post-mortem or an inquest by the local police had raised suspicions.

Reports later suggested that Harpreet had been secretly married to Kamaljit Singh of Begowal village.

Confirming the marriage, Kamaljit Singh and his family had alleged that Harpreet was indeed killed. Kamaljit also petitioned the high court which ordered the CBI to probe the matter, considering the complicated nature of the case.
