Mishra and Sharma fail to make Booker shortlist

Pankaj Mishra's The Romantics and Akhil Sharma's An Obedient Father failed to make it to the Booker Prize 2000 shortlist.

The shortlist for the coveted but controversial Booker include The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood; The Hiding Place by Trezza Azzopardi; The Keepers of Truth by Michael Collins; When We Were Orphans by Kazuo Ishiguro; English Passengers by Matthew Kneale and The Deposition of Father McGreevy by Brian O'Doherty.

Atwood has been shortlisted four times and Ishiguro won the award in 1989. The highly acclaimed White Teeth by 24-year-old Zadie Smith also failed to feature in the list.

The panel of judges included television presenter Mariella Frostrup, writer-journalist Simon Jenkins, Roy Foster, professor of Irish History at Oxford University, Caroline Gascoigne, literary editor of The Sunday Times and bestselling author Rose Tremain.

The winner will be announced on November 7 in London. The awardee will receive a total of £ 21,000. The other five shortlisted authors each receive £ 1,000.
