Decision on petro price
hike rollback deferred

The National Democratic Alliance government Wednesday virtually rejected the demand of Union Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee to roll back prices of petroleum products, with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee asking her to resume office.

In a telephonic conversation with the Trinamul Congress leader, he said a ''second look'' would be possible only after his return from Bombay after a knee surgery.

Giving details of the conversation between the prime minister and railways minister, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan said that Banerjee heard the prime minister patiently. He declined to elaborate if she made any remark.

Earlier in the day, the prime minister held parleys with National Democratic Alliance convenor George Fernandes, Union Home Minister L K Advani, Petroleum Minister Ram Naik, Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and Mahajan, where it was decided to adopt a wait and watch approach.
