Gen Padmanabhan in J&K to take stock

Army Chief General S Padmanabhan Wednesday left on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir to take stock of the situation in the militancy-hit state.

General Padmanabhan will visit forward areas and meet senior commanders and troops of various Rashtriya Rifles formations.

Soon after taking over, the new army chief, who as corps commander of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps had a successful tenure in confronting militancy, said he would be according top priority to curbing militancy in J&K.

"I want to take stock of the situation and have interaction with my senior commanders and soldiers to formulate new measures against militants," he told PTI.

The army chief's visit to the valley comes in the wake of reports of the Pakistan Army making a desperate bid to push a large number of mercenaries into the state from across the Line of Control in a bid to marginalise local militant groups.

There are also reports of the mercenaries trying to capture vital heights on Indian side of the LOC in Rajouri and Poonch sectors.
