25 persons arrested off Gujarat coast

Vikram Vakil

The Coast Guard picked up 25 persons found to be moving in suspicious circumstances off Gujarat.

On being questioned, the group claimed to be residents of a place called Korni, near Karachi, in Pakistan.

But the Coast Guard's suspicions were aroused when they found the people to be in possession of Bangladeshi identification papers.

Not satisfied with their explanations, the Coast Guard has handed them over to the Porbander police. The group was travelling in four boats and was intercepted off the Okha coast.

Inspector Kuldip Singh Dhillon of the Kirti Mandir police station told rediff.com that the police were investigating the antecedents of the arrested persons.

They are also investigating the possibility of the existence of a racket of transporting people from Bangladesh to Pakistan and of the involvement of Indian national(s) in any such racket, he said.

They will be produced before the court on Thursday and a fifteen-day remand will be sought, according to the police. Further investigations are on.
