SAD bags Sunam assembly seat

The Shiromani Akali Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party Janata Party joint candidate and Union Sports Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa's son, Parminder Singh, was on Tuesday declared elected from Sunam assembly constituency in a 13-cornered contest.

Parminder Singh polled 49,007 votes defeating his nearest rival Parmeshwari Devi of the Congress by a margin of 16,711 votes.

The seat had fallen vacant due to the alleged suicide of Parmeshwari Devi's husband, Bhagwan Dass Arora (Congress), recently.

Former Lok Sabha member Prem Singh Chandumajra (Sarb Hind Akali Dal) finished a poor third and got 7,892 votes.

With this, the strength of the SAD in the Punjab assembly rose to 76 in the 117-member house. The break-up of other parties: BJP-18, Congress-14, Communist Party of India-two, Bahujan Samaj Party-one, SAD-Mann-one and Independents-five.
