Congress retains Sheherkotda seat in by-poll

The Congress Tuesday retained the Shaherkotda assembly seat in Gujarat defeating its nearest rival - the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate -- by a margin of 7,148 votes.

The Congress candidate, Shailesh Parmar, polled 18,474 votes, while the BJP's Tulsi Dhabi polled 11,326 votes, Election Commission sources said.

The by-elections were necessitated after the demise of Shailesh Parmar's father.
