No-trust motion against
Gujarat government rejected: PTI

The Gujarat assembly Tuesday rejected by voice vote the opposition's no-confidence motion against the two-and-a-half-year-old Keshubhai Patel ministry, amidst uproarious scenes.

The motion was moved by leader of the opposition Amarsinh Choudhary in the House following the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's debacle in the recent civic-panchayat elections, saying that the government has lost the confidence of the people. It was put to voice vote by Speaker Dhirubhai Shah at the end of the two-day sitting.

Earlier, the House witnessed noisy scenes during the two-hour discussion on the motion, following a remark by Chaudhary against BJP members, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House four times.

BJP members continued to oppose the remark and insisted that Choudhary withdraw it as it was unparliamentary and apologise to the House.

Sticking to his remarks, saying that the words were used by people and not by him, Chaudhary clarified that the words had been used in slips recovered from a ballot box in Rajkot in the recent civic polls.

The assembly was later adjourned sine die after completing the day's business.

The Speaker announced the adjournment of the House after it rejected the motion.

Immediately after question hour, Choudhary moved a one-line motion against the Keshubhai Patel ministry, saying the government had lost the confidence of the people.

The motion was admitted by the House after the Speaker put it to vote and decided to take up the debate after the recess as Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel accepted the discussion on the motion. Patel told the opposition that he was prepared to face the motion on Tuesday itself.

The motion was later taken up for discussion for two hours, but the remark by Chaudhary continued to be raked up by the treasury benches.

The Speaker was forced to adjourn the House four times for 10 minutes on two occasions and for 15 minutes for two occasions and tried to restore order in the House in vain as BJP members kept insisting that Choudhary withdraw the words and shouted anti-Congress slogans.

The chief minister joined members in demanding withdrawal of the remark and an apology from Chaudhary.

As Choudhary did not heed to the request and pressure of ruling party members, the BJP members continued to thump desks even after the four adjournments. At one stage, they did not allow Subash Shelat of the Congress to speak on the issue.

The Speaker tried to persuade the members to take to their seats and complete the discussion on the motion but the members did not allow the House to continue the discussion.

At the end of the day's sitting, the Speaker put the motion to voice-vote, which was rejected. He later took up other business of the House and adjourned it sine die.
