CVC to scrutinise every defence deal

Defence Minister George Fernandes on Sunday said he had issued orders that every defence deal should be sent to the Chief Vigilance Commissioner for scrutiny to avoid corrupt practices.

Addressing a function marking the platinum jubilee of the military school in Chail in Himachal Pradesh, he stressed the need for the people to become security conscious and discuss security matters in public to generate mass awareness on the subject.

Later talking to reporters, Fernandes said disciplinary actions were necessary against those officials going to the media in the process breaking established defence code.

He was replying to a question about the allegation by Brig Surinder Singh that only higher officials in the department were being rewarded, while those in lower ranks were punished.

"Surinder Singh has all options within the defence establishment to seek justice," he said.
