Laloo Yadav sent back to jail

The designated CBI [Central Bureau of Investigation] court on Tuesday remanded Rashtriya Janata Dal president and former Bihar chief minister Laloo Prasad Yadav to judicial custody following the expiry of his bail in the disproportionate assets case.

Special Judge S K Pathak's order meant that Yadav would be sent to the Beur Central Jail.

Pathak passed the order as the Patna high court could not hear the matter on Tuesday for extending Yadav's bail.

Passing the order, Pathak asked Yadav to appear in the designated court on Wednesday. The case comes up again in the CBI court on Wednesday.

CBI pleader L R Ansari requested the designated CBI court to remand Yadav to custody as the period of the provisional bail granted to him by the high court expired on Tuesday.

The high court had granted provisional bail to Yadav on May 11 in connection with the disproportionate assets case.

The former chief minister has been charged with amassing property worth Rs 4.7 million, which is far more than his known sources of income could have permitted him to accumulate, during his tenure from 1990-1996.

Chief Minister Rabri Devi, Yadav's wife, is a co-accused in the case.
