Violence mars Delhi bandh

Police lobbed teargas shells and cane-charged agitating industry owners and workers who clashed with security forces despite massive arrangements during the one-day Delhi shutdown, which affected normal life in the capital Monday.

Sporadic incidents of violence were reported from several parts of west and east Delhi.

In Basai Darapur, West Delhi, police burst 30 teargas shells and cane-charged protestors who were trying to march to Jantar Mantar, near Parliament House, in violation of prohibitory orders.

Joint Commissioner of Police (South) Amod Kanth said 16 persons were arrested on charges of creating disturbances and breaking prohibitory orders.

Protestors tried to hold protests and block traffic at Sagar Pur Chowk and Nangal Rai Market, near Janak Puri in west Delhi and Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi.

However, no one was reported injured.

The shutdown was called in protest against the closure of small-scale industrial units.

Police Commissioner Ajai Raj Sharma had warned that any attempt to create trouble would be dealt with a 'firm hand'. Sharma told UNI that the situation was under control with no major incident reported from any part of the capital.

Schools remained closed and office-goers and other commuters faced difficulties with fewer public transport buses plying on roads in the morning. However, transport services improved during the second half of the day.

Wholesale markets, industrial units and several commercial areas were closed, Laghu Udyog Sanghash Samiti secretary J N Joshi claimed.

The issue of closure of industrial units in the city's residential areas echoed in Parliament and the Delhi Assembly with the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party blaming each other for the situation.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned twice following pandemonium.
