2000 resident doctors on strike in Rajasthan

Over 2000 resident doctors attached to all the five medical colleges in Rajasthan went on a strike Thursday protesting against the suspension of three of their colleagues for conducting a "wrong operation."

Hysterectomy was performed on a woman patient at the state's biggest and most prestigious Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur on November 18 when all she wanted was her kidney stones removed.

Following a high-level meeting held by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, three doctors and a nurse at the SMS hospital were suspended along with the three post-graduate students who had assisted in the operation.

Resident doctors held a meeting in Jaipur late Thursday night and decided that their agitation would continue till the suspension of the three doctors was revoked.

They also demanded the resignation of the health minister owning moral responsibility for the wrong operation.

The doctors alleged that the state government had "misused" its authority by suspending the doctor students without consulting the Medical Council of India.
