Shocker!: Uterus removed instead of kidney stone in Jaipur Hospital

Kamla Bora in Jaipur

Rajasthan government Friday suspended almost an entire unit of the department of surgery in the state's biggest and most prestigious Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur, after surgeons removed the uterus of a patient suffering from kidney stone.

The government suspended five doctors and paramedics and expelled three students from a post-graduate course in surgery.

Twenty-five -year-old Vimla Raigar waiting for her turn to get her kidney stones removed was mistakenly operated upon by general surgery doctors and her uterus removed on November 18.

The hospital said two patients with the same name led to the blunder. The other Vimla, the one scheduled to undergo hysterectomy, had not arrived for the operation on November 18.

However, when her name was called, Vimla Raigar walked into the operation theatre. Inside the theatre, doctors ignored the patient's pleas that she was not to have a major operation.

Her Husband was away at the blood bank when the operation took place.

The staff realised its mistake when the removed uterus preserved in a jar was handed over to her shocked husband.

The matter was then reported to the superintendent of the hospital and an internal inquiry was ordered.

Not satisfied with this, some leaders of the Raigar community reported the matter to Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.

Dr R K Jaineb, an assistant professor in the surgery department, who performed the operation, was put under suspension on the chief minister's order.

The government after reviewing the case ordered suspension of four others on Thursday - the unit head, Professor J M Mehta, house surgeon Dr Guru Dutt, assistant professor (anaesthesia) Dr R C Sunar and the sister-in-charge Sarla Kutty.

Three post-graduate students, who assisted Dr Jaineb, have been expelled from the course.

The government also announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the victim from the chief minister's relief fund.

Meanwhile, resident doctors in the hospital went on a strike Friday in protest against the expulsion of three of their colleagues.
