J&K DGP Jagat may head BSF now

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

The Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Gurbachan Jagat is likely to replace E N Ramamohan as the new Border Security Force chief.

Highly placed sources in Srinagar said search has already begun for the new DGP.

The sources said Jagat was likely to take up the new assignment early next month. The current BSF chief retires on November 30.

Sources said Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah recently held discussions with the Union government and his Cabinet colleagues over the issue.

Two senior IPS officers -- S S Ali, presently additional director general, prisons and fire services; and the state intelligence chief A K Suri -- are being considered to replace Jagat.

Ali is the seniormost IPS officer in the state.

A final decision, the sources said, is expected soon.

Jagat replaced M N Sabarwal in February 1997 immediately after the assembly elections and has been able to re-energise the police force in the state.
