Indian killed in Bahrain storm

A 29-year-old Indian watchman was killed and several people injured as a savage storm ripped through Bahrain on Sunday, the Gulf Daily News reported on Monday.

Ambookan Sani Biju, a watchman at a garden compound in Bar Bar, was crushed to death when a huge tree fell on his wooden cabin. Another watchman from a nearby compound alerted nearby residents at around 0320 hours (Bahrain standard time).

Biju was already dead when medical help reached him. Sources said he was crushed inside the cabin.

Biju was a native of Trichur district in Kerala.

He leaves a wife and a two-year-old daughter. He had been living in Bahrain for seven years.

Biju, who got married in 1997, spent three months with his wife and daughter during his last holiday before resuming duty in February this year, sources said.

He was saving all his money for the family and for the marriage of his younger sister, which he planned to conduct during his next visit home.

Arrangements were being made to fly the body to Cochin on Monday night.

Several people injured during the storm were treated at the emergency rooms in Sulmaniya Medical Complex.

Bahraini Mohammed Salman Mulla Abdulla, 38, was injured when a flying piece of wood smashed through his bedroom window as he watched the storm. He was admitted to the hospital with a fractured chest bone.

Three other people were discharged from the hospital after treatment. One of them suffered a deep wound when a bedroom cupboard fell on his knee.

Another suffered a hand injury when an air-conditioner fell on his bed and the third man escaped with slight injuries when a ceiling collapsed.

In another rare case of heavy rainfall for the Gulf region, seven people drowned in flash floods in neighbouring Saudi Arabia last week.
