Maran continues to be on life support

Union Industries Minister Murasoli Maran was examined by a panel of doctors, including Prof. Horst Kuhn, intervention cardiologist from Germany, on Friday evening as well as Saturday morning, according to a press release issued by Apollo Hospital, Madras, on Saturday at 1200 hours (IST).

In view of persistent lung congestion in the presence of diastolic dysfunction, Prof. Kuhn was of the opinion that he should be re-examined in the Cath Lab.

A recath was performed at 0730 hours (IST) and the procedure was repeated to enhance the effectiveness of the previous ablation.

There were no complications in the procedure and, after observation, Maran was shifted to the ICU and continues to be on life support.

His condition is being closely monitored and Prof. Kuhn has agreed to stay on for one more day for any further review, the release said.

Maran was admitted to Apollo Hospital on October 28 after he complained of uneasiness in the chest region.

On November 7, Apollo Hospitals Chairman Dr Pratap C Reddy informed the media that a pace-maker had been fitted on Maran on Monday night, triggering a flurry of activity with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi himself spending most of the night in the hospital.

Maran, Karunanidhi's maternal nephew, is not only the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagan's senior minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, but also the eyes, ears and mouth of the DMK leadership at Delhi.
