Recounting begins in Florida

Florida election officials Wednesday began an expected two-day recount of nearly 6 million votes of the extraordinary US presidential election between George W Bush and Al Gore.

The outcome of the race hung on the recount as fewer than 1,700 votes separated the two candidates out of more than 100 million cast across America.

The recounting will continue till Thursday, state election officials said in Tallahassee, the state capital.

"It is expected that the recount will be completed by the close of business Thursday," election officials said in a statement.
