George Bush Jr takes the lead

Vice President Al Gore suffered a setback as rival George Bush Jr took the lead in the United States presidential race after prevailing over him in his home state of Tennessee (11) and also Ohio, according to estimates.

Al Gore won Minnesota (10 votes), Pennsylvania (23) and New York, according to estimates.

Bush now has 217 electoral votes to Gore's 172 at 0845 hours (IST) Wednesday, according to estimates.

The total electoral votes needed to win the presidency is 270.
