Narrow lead for Gore

Democrat Al Gore won 146 electoral college votes, while Republican George W Bush won 141 votes, in the United States presidential elections, at 0715 hours IST on Wednesday, according to estimates.

Bush carried the states of Kentucky (12 votes), Indiana (8), Virginia (13), North Carolina (14), Texas (32), Oklahoma (8), Mississippi (7) and Kansas (6), according to the estimates.

Gore won the crucial states of Florida (25) and Michigan (18), besides Vermont (3), Illinois (22), New Jersey (15), Massachusetts (12), Maryland (10), Connecticut (8), Delaware (3) and the District of Columbia (3), according to the estimates.

Both candidates had devoted a lot of time and money to winning Florida, where Bush's brother Jeb is governor, and Michigan.

Pennsylvania (23) and Missouri (11), Tennessee (11) and Alabama (9) were too close to call.

Kentucky voted twice narrowly for Democratic President Bill Clinton but Gore was unpopular in the state due to his positions on gun control and the tobacco industry.

If elected, Bush will be the first presidential son since John Quincy Adams in 1825, to follow his father's footsteps to the White House.

The total electoral votes needed to win the presidency is 270.
