Radioactive uranium recovered from Hyderabad

Police have recovered about 25 kilograms of radioactive uranium from the old city area of Hyderabad on Sunday and arrested one person in this connection.

Efforts were on to nab the other members of the gang.

Police said the uranium was smuggled out from a cancer hospital in the old city after the hospital staff dumped it along with other waste outside the hospital.

The hospital was to return the uranium to the Babha Atomic Research Centre after utilising it for treatment of patients.

The gang of smugglers managed to separate the uranium from the scrap.

Police have sent samples of the uranium to the Nuclear Fuel Complex in the city for testing.

It may be recalled that a radioactive needle went missing from another city cancer hospital recently.
