One person was seriously injured on Friday when criminals opened fire near a polling station in Raghopur constituency from where Chief Minister Rabri Devi is seeking her maiden entry to the Bihar assembly.

The police in Patna said the criminals injured one Jaggu Rai near booth number 104 soon after polling began amid shoot-at-sight orders.

Rai was rushed to the Patna Medical College Hospital.

Tension prevailed in the area after the incident but the situation was under control, the police said. Additional police forces had been deployed in the area. Long queues were seen in the polling booths of the constituency, reports said.

About 20 per cent of the 617,759 voters exercised their franchise in the first three hours of polling in the by-elections to the assembly seats of Raghopur, Jamui and Nirsa in Bihar.

Along with the chief minister 24 other candidates are in the fray in the three constituencies.

Rabri Devi (RJD) is pitted against the JD-U's Vira Devi among four others in Raghopur. The seat was vacated by her husband and RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav who decided to retain Danapur after winning both seats in the February polls.
