Three killed in Bihar, 55 per cent voting

An estimated 55 per cent of the 600,000 voters exercised their franchise on Friday in the by-elections to three assembly seats in Bihar.

At least three people killed in a group clash in Raghopur from where Chief Minister Rabri Devi is seeking her maiden entry to the assembly.

Reports of ballot paper snatching, group clashes and firing were received from several pockets in the Raghopur, Jamui and Nirsa assembly segments.

Director General of Police K A Jacob said a driver of an independent candidate from Raghopur and another person were killed when criminals opened fire in Fatepur village.

Jacob said a certain Kamashwar Singh was shot and two others injured in a group clash under Bidupur police station in Raghopur.

He said more than 45 people had been detained in the three constituencies for obstructing the poll process. He, however, maintained that polling was by and large peaceful.

State election office sources said about 55 per cent of the total 617759 electorate exercised their franchise at 787 polling stations.

Raghopur witnessed the highest turnout with more than 60 per cent of the voters exercising their franchise, while it was lowest in Jamui with 45 per cent voting.

Counting of votes begins on May 29 at 8 am.
