E-Mail this report to a friend

French Defence Minister Alain Richard began a two-day visit to India on Thursday and held talks with Indian Defence Minister George Fernandes.

Officials said talks could lead to an arms purchase by the Indian armed forces.

In Paris, French defence ministry spokesman Jean-Francois Bureau said Richard would discuss strategic relations, the fight against nuclear proliferation and arms sales during his visit.

Richard will meet President K R Narayanan and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today.
