Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Militants made an attempt this morning to blow up the State assembly building in the heart of the capital city, even as night curfew was imposed in the entire border district of Kupwara.

Police said the militants fired a rocket at the heavily guarded building from Gow Kadal, but missed the target. Two civilians received injuries in the explosion and were admitted to a nearby hospital.

Later in the evening militants attacked an escort vehicle of Doordarshan with a handgrenade resulting in injuries to eight people, including four jawans of the Central Reserved Police Force.

Curfew was imposed today in the entire border district of Kupwara and deputy commissioner, Mohammad Yassin Shah, said curfew would remain in force in the entire district between 10 pm and 4 am.

Meanwhile, a high-level team of the Union Home Ministry, headed by T R Kakkar, special secretary in-charge of Kashmir affairs, is arriving here tomorrow to take stock of the situation.

The team will be briefed by the State police chief Gurbachan Jagat and other senior officers.

This is the second visit of Kakkar this week to Srinagar. He had held discussions with state officials following the killing of state power minister in a landmine blast recently.
