Major shift in UK stand on J&K: Jaswant

E-Mail this report to a friend

External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh today informed the Lok Sabha that a major shift in the stand of the United Kingdom on Indo-Pak relations was evident after the Kargil war.

The minister said the shift in its foreign policy was also noted in a comprehensive statement on Jammu and Kashmir made following a debate in the House of Commons on July 21, 1999 in which the UK government inter alia stated that ''it is important to recognise that the incursion and continued violence of the militants in Jammu and Kashmir have done nothing and can do nothing to promote a durable solution in Kashmir''.

The evidence suggests that the militants have little in common with the ordinary people of Kashmir and do not represent them, Singh said while replying the question of Rattan Lal Kataria.

He said the UK government has also expressed happiness over the action already taken by the Indian authorities in addressing human rights issues.
