Ex-wife takes Chetan Chauhan to court

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Even as the Indian Cricket fraternity is caught in a vortex of match-fixing allegations, former opener Chetan Chauhan is facing trouble on the personal front. His first wife Anita, now settled in Australia, has filed a criminal case against him alleging that he remarried without divorcing her.

The South Delhi police filed charges against the former test player in March last year and the matter is currently pending before a women's court.

Sources said Chauhan has so far not responded to court summons. The court has now posted the matter for July 12, 2000 and has asked the deputy commissioner of police in charge of the South District to ensure that Chauhan attends the hearing.

Anita has also accused Chauhan of selling 200 shares of Hero Honda Motors by forging her signatures.

Chetan Chauhan, when contacted, has refused to comment on the charges saying the matter was sub-judice. His friends, however, said Anita's charges would not stand scrutiny in a court.

Chauhan now lives in Mayur Vihar in Naga Arjun Apartments with his second wife and a daughter.

Attempts to contact Anita failed as she has left Delhi for Australia. Neighbours said she has sold the flat Chauhan had given her. Chauhan said he had knowledge of this.
