E-Mail this report to a friend

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Close on the heels of the killing of the power minister yesterday, militants early this morning fired rifle grenades on the heavily guarded Tagore Hall in the heart of Srinagar city. The building houses a recreation hall.

A senior police officer told rediff.com that militants fired between three and five rifle grenades which exploded on the rooftop of the building situated near a battalion headquarters of the Central Reserve Police Force at Gogjibagh in the city. However, no one was injured in the attack.

Senior police and security officials rushed to the area which was cordoned off, and conducted searches. The roof of the building was partially damaged in the attack.

Elsewhere, one militant was killed on the spot when an explosive device he was trying to plant in Pulwama went off. His body was mutilated beyond recognition, the police said.
