Gujarat HC orders probe into Lt Col Save's death

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Gujarat high court has appointed a fact-finding committee to inquire into the circumstances leading to the death of Lt Col Pratap Save, retired army officer and president of the Kinara Bachao Sangharsh Samiti, who died due to head injuries allegedly inflicted on him while in police custody.

Justice M R Calla, heading the single bench, passed this order yesterday after hearing the PIL filed by the Sangarsh Samiti. Lt Col Save had spearheaded the agitation against the construction of the proposed Umbergaon port, which will prove to be non-beneficial for the residents of the place.

The committee, consisting of state law secretary, a home department officer and a senior lawyer of high court will ascertain whether any injury caused to Lt Col Save while in police custody led to his death. The report, to be submitted within six weeks, will also fix responsibility for the torture.

Lt Col Save was summoned to the police station at midnight on April 7 and allegedly tortured. He later died in a Bombay hospital due to brain haemorrhage.
