Backlog vacancies to be taken out of reservation quota

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Union government today decided to amend Article 16 of the Constitution to enable states to consider backlog vacancies as a separate class of vacancies, nullifying the effect of a Supreme Court judgement (Indira Sawney vs Union of India). .

The government will introduce a bill in Parliament to take out the backlog vacancies from the purview of reservation order, which imposes a restriction of 50 per cent on direct recruitment in all categories of government posts.

Official sources said thousands of posts in Union government as well as state governments could not be filled in previous years because of non-availability of suitable candidates.

The constitutional amendments would also enable the government to re-launch direct special recruitment drives for the SC/STs.
