Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Suhaib Illyasi, the producer of the television serial India's Most Wanted, was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by a Delhi court.

Illyasi was arrested Tuesday morning by the Delhi Police on charges of harassing his wife Anju to death on January 10.

The police have registered a case against him under sections 498-A, 304-B, 201 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code after Sub Divisional Magistrate Ravi Kumar Dadich handed over his inquiry report to Delhi Police Commissioner Ajay Raj Sharma.

Rashmi Singh, Anju's sister, had given a 17-page statement to the SDM wherein she made certain serious allegations against Illyasi. Family sources said Singh accused Illyasi of making monetary demands from the family ever since he got married to Anju a few years ago. She gave several instances of mental harassment that Illyasi is alleged to have caused to Anju and relatives.

Talking to rediff.com, Deputy Commissioner of Police, East District, S Nithianandam said the police had sought four days from the court to investigate the matter further. This was however turned down by the magistrate.

"We are keeping all options open. We have registered the case against Illyasi as Anju died an unnatural death and according to the judgement of the Supreme Court of India any unnatural death within seven years of marriage has to be investigated properly. We have taken action against Illysai on the basis of the statements given by the sister and mother of the deceased," he said.

Though Anju's relatives had earlier given Illaysi a clean chit, they have now changed their stand.

Illyasi's relatives, for their part, claimed that he had been deliberately framed in the case as the police could not find anything against him during the preliminary investigation. "He did whatever he could to save his wife's life but he did not succeed in his effort. The family members of Anju are under pressure from their relatives to fix Suhaib," they claimed.
